Boys Jumps
State Champions Nate Moore and Eric Moore, along with superstar Adoree' Jackson, lead an outstanding contingent of jumpers into the 2014 outdoor season.
Seniors Eric Moore of Carter and Vincent Calhoun of Long Beach Poly are the top two returning high jumpers this spring, bringing very similar resumes into the season. Moore and Calhoun both cleared a personal best of 6-11 at the California State Meet last season, with Moore coming away with the win on fewer misses. Eric Moore is the Southern Section Divison 2 champion, and had significant wins at the Maurice Greene Invitational and the Inland Empire Championships. Vincent Calhoun is the Southern Section Division 1 champion, and was a big winner at the Redondo Invitational. Look for these two to lead the way in the high jump this spring, but don't expect it to be merely a two man battle at the top. Behind them the state has another nine boys who have cleared 6-07 or better. Eric Moore of Carter is the defending state champ in the High Jump High Jump Top Returners
Long Jump With a 2013 PR of 25-00, Adoree' Jackson of Serra Gardena is the top returning Long Jumper in the nation. Jackson's 25 footer came at the CIF Southern Section Finals, and he went on to jump 24-09 at Masters and 24-07.5 at State to finish second behind Nate Moore. All of this as he participated in the 100, 200, and took part in Serra's dominant 4x100 relay team. Jackson hs already shown he's serious this season with a 24-01.25 leap at the Simplot Games last weekend. Nate Moore of Castro Valley is the #2 returning jumper nationally, and with a PR of 24-11.75, the .25 inch difference is negligible. Moore's big jump came at the right time - in the state final - to take the win away from favorite Jackson. Moore's only other 24 foot clearance came at the state prelims. But Moore already looks to be competing at a higher level this season, jumping 23-11.75 at Simplot last week, to come within an inch and a half of a win versus Jackson. More about Moore the Triple jumper below... Scotty Newton of Bakersfield is the third California Long Jumper to have cleared the 24 foot barrier. Newton's best of 24-02.75 came at last year's West Coast Relays where he won the TJ as well. Newton will no doubt be a threat for the top spot in California. And as always, there is a long list of up and comers gunning for these stars, with 10 boys having cleared 22-10 or better coming back from 2013. Long Jump Top Returners
Triple Jump Nate Moore of Castro Valley followed up his State Championship in the Long Jump with a matching gold in the Triple Jump, joining Ariana Washington and Blake Haney as the only two event returning champions. Perhaps not coincidentally, all three have signed letters of intent to compete for Oregon. Moore launched his best leap at the state finals, clearing 50-11.75 to set himself up as the #2 returning triple jumper nationally - the same position he occupies in the Long Jump. Unlike the Long Jump though, Moore is a clear favorite in triple as he starts the season. In addition to his state title, he came away with big wins at Arcadia, Stanford, and Sacramento Meet of Champions. Myles Hawkins of Orange Lutheran is serious contender for hardware at state this year, with a best of 49-10 (48-04.5 without wind) and a 3rd place at last spring's state championships to his credit. Hawkins took home top honors at the Laguna Beach Trophy Invitational, the Irvine Invitational, and the Orange County Championships. Leading a solid chase pack of triple jumpers are Scotty Newton of Bakersfield, Idrees Bernard of Agoura, and Matt Bowen of Buchanan. In all, eleven boys return with PRs over 47 feet, and anything can happen. Triple Jump Top Returners
